Cooling System
CJ Steps
CJ overheating is one of the highest-traffic topics in every forum, and the misdiagnosis rate is extremely high. Owners install new radiators and still overheat. They remove thermostats and make it worse. They add electric fans and create new problems. Almost all of it comes down to not evaluating the cooling system as a system -- and not making sure everything upstream of it is correct first.
Step 7 comes after ignition for a reason. Retarded timing causes the engine to run hot -- combustion continues into the exhaust stroke and dumps heat into the system that the cooling circuit was not designed to manage. A rich fuel mixture does the same thing. Before you draw any conclusions about the cooling system, confirm from Step 4 and Step 5 that the engine is properly tuned. Evaluating cooling capacity on an engine with retarded timing or a stumbling carburetor produces results that do not reflect what the cooling system actually needs.
Also note that cooling system hoses were covered in Step 2. If you replaced them there -- including verifying no internal collapse on the lower radiator hose -- you have already addressed one of the most common hidden causes of CJ overheating. The Cooling System Is a System
Effective cooling requires all of these components working together. A failure in any one of them can cause overheating even when everything else is new:
- A functioning thermostat -- correct temperature rating, not removed
- A healthy water pump -- correct rotation direction for your engine, no bearing wear
- A radiator with adequate flow capacity and no blocked passages
- A fan shroud that directs all fan airflow through the radiator core
- A fan clutch that engages correctly at temperature
- Hoses with no internal collapse or restriction (addressed in Step 2)
- A pressure cap that holds the correct system pressure
- Timing and fuel mixture that are not generating excess heat (addressed in Steps 4 and 5)
A CJ that overheats despite a new radiator almost always has one of the other items on that list failing. The diagnosis needs to be systematic, starting from the least expensive and most commonly overlooked items first.

The Thermostat: Do Not Remove It
Removing the thermostat to fix overheating is one of the most persistent mistakes in CJ ownership and it gets corrected constantly in forums. The thermostat does not just limit coolant temperature -- it regulates flow rate through the system. Without a thermostat, coolant flows through the engine too quickly to absorb heat efficiently, which can actually cause localized hot spots and make overheating worse. The engine also takes far longer to reach operating temperature, which increases wear and reduces fuel efficiency.
If the thermostat is suspect, replace it with a quality unit at the correct temperature rating for your application. A 195-degree thermostat is standard for most CJ applications. Do not run without one.
The Water Pump Rotation: A Critical Detail on the 258
The AMC 258 and the later 4.0L water pumps rotate in opposite directions. They look nearly identical -- but there is a visual shortcut before you even start the engine. The 258 uses a V-belt accessory drive. The 4.0L uses a serpentine belt. Look at the water pump pulley: if it has a single wide serpentine groove on an engine that should be running V-belts, the wrong pump is installed. You do not need a flow test to confirm it.
If the pulley looks correct but you still suspect rotation, remove the thermostat housing, start the engine briefly with the system cold, and confirm coolant is circulating in the correct direction. A pump installed with the wrong rotation is pushing coolant backward through the system and providing almost no cooling -- which makes the Jeep overheat dramatically even with a new radiator and everything else in order. This misinstallation is more common than it should be.
The Fan Clutch: The Component Nobody Tests
The factory mechanical fan clutch loses engagement efficiency gradually over time -- approximately 5 percent per year is a commonly cited estimate. By the time a CJ reaches its third or fourth decade, the fan clutch may be significantly underperforming without showing any obvious signs of failure. There is no warning light, no noise, no dramatic failure event. It just quietly stops pulling air the way it is supposed to.
The test is simple: with the engine off and completely cold, try to spin the fan by hand. It should resist with meaningful force. If it spins freely or with minimal resistance, the clutch is worn. Replace it before drawing any conclusions about whether the radiator is adequate. A degraded fan clutch can make a perfectly good radiator appear insufficient.
The Fan Shroud: The Most Overlooked Part of the Cooling System
The fan shroud is not optional. The shroud seals the fan to the radiator and creates a concentrated airflow path through the entire radiator core. Without it, the fan pulls air from around the edges of the radiator rather than through it, and cooling efficiency drops dramatically -- even with a healthy fan clutch. If your CJ is missing the shroud or has a cracked, damaged one, that is the first cooling fix to make. A new radiator installed without a proper shroud will underperform compared to the old radiator with one.
Electric Fans: Not Always the Answer
Electric fan conversions come up constantly in CJ discussions, and the real-world results are mixed. The factory seven-blade mechanical fan with a proper shroud moves approximately 3,500 CFM through the radiator core. Most aftermarket electric fan setups in the tight confines of a CJ engine bay struggle to match that flow rate -- particularly at low vehicle speeds when airflow through the grille is minimal and the electric fan is doing all the work.
Multiple experienced CJ builders have tried two or three electric fan configurations before returning to the mechanical setup. If your mechanical fan and shroud are in good condition, they are almost certainly the correct solution. Reserve electric fans for situations where the mechanical fan genuinely cannot work -- typically engine swap applications where fan clearance or belt drive configuration does not allow it.
